Four Eyes

Some things are supposed to happen in childhood.
For example:
- Break at least one bone (possibly mostly for the men)
- Contract chickenpox
- Experience the first day of school
- Give, or receive, your first elementary playground kiss
- Go to sleepovers
- Play Truth or Dare
- Learn to ride a bike
- Get glasses (if you need them)
I’m sure many people will disagree with the last one, glasses. For me there has always been an age-appropriate window for obtaining your first pair of glasses: before 8 or after 50. So from the age of 8 until you reach your fiftieth birthday, if you don’t already have glasses you’re in the clear.
This childhood misconception came crashing down for me this past week. After a mere 27 years my unaided eyes needed some correction. I suppose the thousands of hours I’ve logged behind a computer finally caught up with me.
I must now rely on these trendy rounded pieces of plastic while reading or using a computer. My perception about glasses has been brought into focus (pun totally intended). I wouldn’t say this is something I’ve changed my mind about. Probably more of a truth revealed.
What about you? Any recent discoveries related to unfulfilled childhood experiences or unrealistic expectations?
